I know that not many people read my blog, but I had to tell you all why I haven't been blogging in a while. Basically I had an epiphany about going back to school and finishing a degree in engineering. I then applied to BCIT's Electrical and computer engineering program, and got in. Since then I have been eating, sleeping and drinking school.

My goal is to end the semester with a 90% average, so I have to stay on point.

Well the VMA's came and went and really I dont watch award shows so I don't really care who wins. The thing on everyones lips on monday morning was how much of a jerk Kanye West was. The thing is I'm a big Kanye fan, but come on. How am I supposed to tell people how good you are when you pull this kind of garbage?

All I could do is watch in utter disgust as a drunk Kanye grabbed the mic from an excited Taylor Swift and preceded to let everyone know that the best video of the year was Beyonce's "Single Ladies." Not only did he do something totally disrespectful, but that video also sucks Moose antlers. I mean its just 3 girls dancing in leotards, I mean if its such a good video why can everyone on the planet make their own version of it?

In Kanye's defence he did come out and publicly apologize, but listen Kanye. Stop saying things just because you deem them important. I agreed with you on the whole "George Bush does not care about black people thing," but to get up on stage and disrespect an innocent little girl to say something totally ridiculous about a sub-par video? Lame.

So, after Usian's crazy 100m time he came back and did it again. Mr. Bolt ran the 200m in 19.19 which, like his 100m performance, destroyed his world record time by 0.11 seconds.

Lightning was reported in Berlin on August 16th 2009. Usain Bolt, in what seemed to be a defiance of the laws of physics, smashed his previous 100m World Record time of 9.69. That's 0.11 seconds faster that what he ran in the Olympics in 2008. If you have ever competed in sprinting you will know that 0.11 is an eternity when it comes to World Class Athletes.

Well, I haven't been blogging that much this summer. There is just so much to do, and the last thing I want to do while it's sunny outside is to sit in front of a computer. To be honest its not only the sun, I've just been super busy. That being said lets continue.

I went down to the States this weekend and picked up a pair of pumps...Yes they aren't just for girls!!! I'm normally a Nike guy all the way, but sometimes there are shoes out there that just catch your eyes. What I'm really trying to say is I wouldn't be mad if everyone just wore pumps.

What a weekend!! For my birthday my GF gave me plane tickets to Calgary to spend some time with my boys. Best birthday gift ever and I had a blast in Cowtown. Sometimes you meet people that you click with so well that, despite being far away for a while you remain close friends no matter what. That being said I love my boys from Calgary and I had an amazing trip.

Our long time cat Midnight finally chased his last bird around our house. We have had him since September 91, making him 17 years old. I thought he was a goner this winter because he disappeared but sure enough he made it back. I guess that was the last of his 9 lives. He lived a good long life and he was the friendliest cat I have ever seen. I know he is in a better place now.

I was checking out some blogs this morning and I happened to come across a very interesting article on a blog called Style with Benefits. Normally I don't like to copy and paste articles but this is one I'd like to keep for myself. As I get older I need to start dressing the part.

Kenyatte Nelson was named Esquire's Best Dressed Man in America and here is what he had to say in response to some questions.

Describe your personal style in five words or less. Inspired, unpretentious and appropriately aspirational

Have you always been into fashion? When did you start to take an interest in cultivating your personal style? I believe style is synonymous with personality. It’s something that everyone has and like personality, it simply develops differently for different people. I think I’m probably just a little more “aware” of my personal style vs. most men. As far as fashion goes – Fashion is social agreement, consensus….I’ve never been into fashion.

What has been your biggest splurge to date? I have two. The first is a pair of Victorian style boots from Dior (see photo). The second is a suit from Givenchy (see photo with gray suit/black shirt). True story, I walked into a Hugo Boss store in Geneva Switzerland and I had that suit on with those shoes and the sales person stopped me and said, “That suit looks amazing, and the way you wear it makes me wish I was the one who sold it to you.”

If you only had to wear one designer for the rest of your life, who would you choose? I would have to go with Ralph Lauren. From 1967, when the brand was founded, until now there has not been a designer who has so completely addressed men’s wear. From sweatpants to rugby’s, waist coats to overcoats, brogues to trainers he pairs amazing shirt tailoring with American sensibilities in a way that is simply outstanding!

Your house is burning and you only have time to grab one item from your closet. What would you take and why? The tan leather cowboy boots (with the Cuban heel) that I took from my fathers closet when I was in Junior High School. Those boots are almost 30 years old and they are still my favorite pair of shoes. I wore them when I was on the Today Show and named Esquire’s Best Dressed Man in America. My father walked in those boots and he’s an amazing man. When I put them on I feel more substantive.

Describe the fashion scene in Cincinnati and the current trends men and women are wearing there. The fashion scene here is burgeoning. Like most mid sized cities Cincinnati ebbs and flows with the tides created by the current (pun intended). That said, there is still creativity here. From skaters with limited edition kicks to women wearing the latest item from a vintage store hunt. You see a little bit of everything. The one thing I wish would go away is the “jeans hanging off the ass” look.

What’s a big DON’T when it comes to men's style? See the last sentence in the answer to the previous question. Men look better when their clothing fits….period. The only time your pants should be that low is when a member of the opposite sex is taking them off (then it’s okay).

Over the years, have you picked up any insider shopping tips you could share? This includes tips on sales, online shopping sites, etc. ALWAYS go to the Barney’s Warehouse sale, NEVER buy anything full price unless it is a must have. ALWAYS buy quality clothing in the correct size, NEVER buy something that doesn’t fit just because it’s on sale (you will regret it). Ah…and gentlemen please stop buying “outfits” and start buying pieces that work with other things in your wardrobe. Your closet should not be a collection of conjoined twins. Visit yoox and houseoffraser (amazing sites for shopping – men and women)

For the ladies…

What’s your favorite look/style on a woman? Elegant and sophisticated? Super trendy and glam? Casual chic? The most amazing outfit any women can put on is a pair of hip hugging denim, killer heels and a white “boy beater”. It’s natural, sexy and approachable. It says, I’m a women who is comfortable with my femininity but if you give me shit I’ll kick your ass (I LOVE that).

btw – here’s a trick. Make the outfit pop with a creatively styled or colored pair of heels and sex it up with a little lace under the tank top (see photo of Leighton Meester).

You need to buy a gift for a woman. What stores do you visit? The grocery store. Invite her over for dinner and make sure she arrives a little before you finish. Pour her a glass of wine and have a great conversation while you complete the finishing touches. Prepare her food and take the plate when she is finished. Enjoy each others company. It will be the best foreplay she has ever had….trust me.

What women’s fashion trends would you like to see go away? I wish women would stop confusing sex with sexy. You don’t have to exude sex to be sexy. There is so much power in femininity. Women have to understand that men are built to bend to that power. If you want a “man”….dress like a “woman”. There is nothing wrong with showing a little leg but make sure it’s balanced. Do you remember the green Versace dress that Jennifer Lopez got all that press for wearing? Yep, the one with a “V” cut out of the torso. Guess what…it was long sleeved and floor length.

Two gorgeous women walk into a bar. One is wearing a t-shirt and jeans and the other is in a body-hugging mini dress. Did I mention both are equally gorgeous? Who do you approach and why? I approach the woman who looks the most approachable. The one who is smiling, laughing and joking with friends. I approach the one with smiling eyes. For me, it’s less about what she is wearing and more about how she is wearing it. Is she confident and comfortable or unapproachable and cold? I, like most men, am much more attracted to the former. Besides, clothing is just clothing and at some point it’s all going to come off anyway.

What’s something you wish women knew about men? Women should recognize that as much as we love our independent women we want a woman who will allow us to be men. We know you can do it yourself and we love you for that but sometimes you have to let us do it for you. This is part of what being a man is about. Men enjoy feeling needed. We want the women we love to be taken care of, to feel protected. Don’t give a man shit when he opens the car door or refuse his attempt to carry your bag. Let him do it. All men are taught, from a very young age, that they should cherish the things that they work for….now ask yourself….did your man work for you???

I loved your mission statement and fashion philosophy from your profile on Esquire.com. Can you please share other rules you live by or your personal philosophy on life? This may sound a little corny but I would suggest every man do this: Take a sheet of paper and split it 4 sections. In each section make a headline – Heart, Mind, Body, Soul. Then for each heading write 4 things that you will do to improve each part of your life over the next year. They can be simple, the idea is to set goals. Here are examples from mine.

Heart
- Give one compliment a day

Mind
- Read one book every two months

Body
- Go to the gym at least 3 days a week

Soul
- Stop to recognize the beauty in my world everyday (share it with another person)

I did this over a year ago and, as a result, I am a sharper, more empathetic, and in better shape than I have ever been.

As for myself; give a compliment a day...check, go to the gym at least 3 days a week...check. Now to start reading a book every two months and take time to stop and recognize the beauty in the world.

So, tonight I was watching "He Got Game". Such a good basketball movie that shows you a real life setting of Jesus (played by Ray Allen, Mr. Perfect shooting form and such a quick release), a kid who is about to graduate high school and head to either college or the pros. I don't want to get into the story too much, but I will say that it is one of my all time favorite movies (probably because it's a basketball movie).

I was wondering who played his mother, and what other movies she has done prior or after "He Got Game". After I checked that out I decided to see what some of the other actors were up to through the imdb website. Obviously I had to check out what Rosario Dawson was up to, and I found out that she did a little short movie called "Little Black Dress".

"Little Black Dress" is a short movie about a girl that gets a new job, then gets invited to a work banquet. She has no outfit and little time to find a new one so she picks up a little black dress. She puts it on but feels very self conscious because the dress shows her tattoo. She meets a lady in the washroom, has a talk with her and emerges with a different outlook on the whole situation.

What we can take from this is the following; In this day and age it shouldn't matter what you look like, only the kind of person you are, so Stand Tall.

OMG, I just watched the trailer for the upcoming Sherlock Holmes movie. This just might be the movie of the year, beating out the very well done Star Trek. Robert Downey Jr. (Iron Man, Tropic Thunder) plays the roll of Sherlock while Jude Law (Alfie, The Holiday) plays Watson.

Well, looks like I have no idea what I'm talking about when it comes to basketball, rofl. Both the teams that I picked to win BOTH LOST!

Cleveland was leading most of the game, and with about 3 mins left in the 4th quarter they gave up the lead. There were a few lead changes at the end but Rashard Lewis ended up sealing the deal with a clutch shot with about 12 seconds left.

Denver also lost, wtf. In a very close game also, Denver was up most of the 4th quarter but blew a 5 point lead to eventually loose by 2 to the fake show!

Well, after 2 blowout game 7s, we are now ready to begin the Semi Final matchups. With the Lakers and the Nuggets coming out of the West, and the Cavs and Magic coming out of the East. To give you a bit of history, the Lakers are 3-1 against the Nuggets this year while the Magic are 2-1 against the Cavs this year. Of course the playoffs are a different game than the regular season, but its still an interesting stat.

If I have it my way the Nuggets will dispatch the Lakers in 6, while the Cavs will take the Magic in 5. This will set up an interesting Finals between Denver and Cleveland where the Cavs win it all in 6.

NBA Playoffs

The NBA playoffs have been crazy. There were some great opening round series (Boston vs. Chicago), and some broom swept series (Cleveland vs. Detroit). After the first round the teams left standing were: Houston vs. LA, Denver vs. Dallas, Cleveland vs. Atlanta, and Boston vs. Orlando.

So far 4 games have been played in each series and the Cleveland Cavaliers have already swept up the Atlanta Hawks. As far as the other series go: Houston 2 vs. LA 2, Denver 3 vs. Dallas 1, and Boston 2 vs. Orlando 2.

If all goes according to plan, I would like to see Denver beat Dallas, and Houston Beating the Lake show in the west. Then Denver Beating Houston and going to the finals. Now in the East I'd like to see Boston beating Orlando and facing Cleveland in the eastern finals. Now if KG is healthy for that series I want them to win, but if not I'll take the Cav's.

Then in the finals (which better go to 7 games), whichever team comes out of the east will be my pick to win it all.

Semi Finals

Well, we won our quarterfinal match despite playing pretty badly. Today was our semifinal game against a very experienced Ball is All team. Our offense was decent, but when it came to our defense, it was nonexistent. Fact is we got beat by a team that plays similar to us. They had a better transition game than we did, and that's what won the game. On a side note the FAKE half-black ref, who can't ref his way out of a wet paper bag, told one of our players to "fuck off." What a professional ref ROFL. The reason why I call him FAKE half-black is that he singles me out and calls the worst fouls against me. We joke about it on the sidelines, "half-black on half-black crime." Well, I had a blast playing this season now its time to get back to the gym.

Playoffs!

Tonight, after having a time change, is the first night of playoffs for my Men's League team NV US. We play the last year B team champions Big Rock, and it should be a good game. Despite being 2nd in the league, we only beat Big Rock by 5 in overtime this season.

Well, the Madness of March is over and we have a clear cut victor. The UNC Tar Heels led by Ty Lawson and Tyler Hansbrough decimated the Michigan State Spartans yesterday by a score of 89-72. Most of the game UNC was up near the 20 point mark. Maybe next years final game will be more exciting.

I really can't wait until this movie comes out in the theatre. Although much of the story was made for the movie, I still think it will be a good story. I mean lots of Wolverine's story is based in Canada. If only it was rated R for violence, blood, gore, nudity, profanity and sex... A guy can wish cant he?

With our last Men's League regular season game last night my team, NV US, finished with a huge win over the Clams. This takes our win streak to 9, with a 10-2 record this puts us at second place in our league. With playoffs just around the corner lets hope we can keep playing like we have. In similar news, I said that I would throw down a dunk in the game, well I got my opportunity but the ball slipped out of my hand at the last second and ended up hitting the back of the rim and going out. Say you picked the Jurassic period. This would have no change on dinosaurs, and birds and humans.

This is a meal I had while I was in Vietnam, its from a restaurant called Mango, and it is located in Hoi Ann. This amazing dish had fresh mangoes on it, the meat was juicy and tender, and the noodles were great. What more could you ask for?

Well, the Sooners made it to the Elite Eight but then got served by the UNC Tarheels. The only team that I have left on my fantasy bracket is Uconn. The teams that made it to the final four are: UNC, Villanova, Uconn, and Michigan State.

That leaves me to cheer for the Uconn Huskies. They play Michigan State, then if they win they play the winner of UNC/Nova.

Our final Men's League game is tomorrow. At the moment we have 9 wins and 2 losses, and a win tomorrow puts us at 10 and 2 with a 9 game win streak since February 8th. All I can say is that I can't wait to suit up and have some fun. Do I dare dunk it over someone tomorrow?

So yeah, I've been totally slacking on this blog. For one I've been watching tons of NCAA tournament, and secondly I've been moving stuff all over my house getting it ready to be painted. Well I'm here now, so lets start out with some NCAA.

In the first round I went 23 for 32. In the second round I went 14 for 16, the teams that let me down were Washington loosing to Purdue and the fact that Wake Forest did not even make it to the second round. That allowed Arizona to "sneak in" and make it to the sweet 16.

The teams I have making it to the elite 8 are as follows:
Out of the West will be Uconn and Memphis. Out of the Mid-West Louisville and Kansas. Out of the East Pitt and Duke, and finally out of the South UNC and Oklahoma.
As you know I'm going for the Oklahoma Sooners to win it all, with Uconn loosing to them in the finals.

The Ncaa tournament is 8 games in, and it's only going to get better. Uconn crushed Chattanooga, UNC destroyed Radford, Maryland upset California, Purdue beat Northern Iowa, and finally Washington beat Mississippi State. So far in my fantasy pool I'm 8 for 8 in the first 8 games! Can't wait for more!

First 3 games are done, and they were some exciting games. Texas A&M beat BYU, Memphis beat CS Northridge, and LSU beat Butler. So far I'm 3 for 3 with the opening 3 games in my fantasy bracket!! I'll be updating lots during the March madness so keep checking back!

With only 2 days left until the start of the "Road to the Final Four" people all across North America are filling in their NCAA tournament brackets. It is estimated that 3.5 billion dollars will trade hands in bets. I've set up a pool of my own with no cash prizes, so we'll see how well I do compared to a couple of close friends. I have Oklahoma winning it all, don't disappoint me Sooners!

Watchmen

In my younger days I was really into comic books. I didn't have a huge collection, but I have always been fascinated by super heroes/villains and their super powers. I would ask my friends what super powers they would take if they were given the choice. Some people wanted super strength and agility, others wanted to be able to fly, even others wanted to be super fast. Each person had their own reason for the powers they chose, whether it would make them better at what they normally did, or make them different than the norm.

The power that I thought would be the best was a power I had never heard of any super hero having (I'm sure someone had it, I just hadn't heard of the hero). My power would be the ability to control time. At first this seems pretty week compared to super strength, and speed, but if you look more closely it may vary well be the most paramount of all the powers. First of all you can stop time, giving you the ability to do anything without interruption. Secondly, you could rewind time, so if anything went wrong you could always make it right. I wont get into all the cool things you could do with the ability to control time but I think you get the idea.

Now back to the reason for this post. I just acquired a copy of the Watchmen graphic novel and so far I really am enjoying it. I told myself that I wouldn't go and see the movie until I had finished reading the graphic novel for two reasons:
The first reason is that I haven't read a book in ages, and what better place to start than with a graphic novel.
The second reason is because the Watchmen is very different from most of the comics I am used to reading. The watchmen deals with a world that is much closer to our own where heroes don't really have super powers (other than Dr. Manhattan). Its definitely much more realistic than your run of the mill X-men or Superman comic.

Men's basketball league

Currently I play in a Men's basketball league up at Capilano University. This year we are kicking ass and taking names, with a record of 8 wins and 2 losses. Our first loss was due to not having enough guys out on our very first game. I will mention that we are on a 7 game win streak since February 8th. We have had some close games, and unlike last year, we have managed to play hard and smart down the stretch. With 2 regular season games left, we hope to keep piling up the Wins.

I think the funniest thing is that I don't have one picture of me playing basketball, I guess your just going to have to make due with a picture of my favourite pair of Jordan's (XI).
